What are minerals?

Minerals are nutrients that are necessary for your body to function effectively. They are necessary for the regulation of enzymes and hormones, amongst others. Minerals are substances that your body is unable to produce itself. For this reason, they need to be included in your diet in sufficient amounts.

Where are they found?

It is important to eat a healthy and varied diet to take in sufficient minerals every day. Minerals occur in both plant (vegetables, fruit and nuts) and animal (meat and fish) food products.

Which minerals are there?

The most well-known minerals are: Calcium, Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium. In addition, your body requires smaller quantities of Iron, Iodine, Fluoride, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Chromium and Molybdenum. These substances are referred to as trace elements. The body requires more minerals than trace elements. 

A varied diet usually includes sufficient minerals. However, there are many different factors that influence your need for minerals. If your body does not take in sufficient minerals, it can be necessary to augment the shortfall with a supplement.
